Reddit vs. Quora: Who Will Reign Supreme in Google Searches?

Suddenly, page one of google is flooded with questions and answers on Reddit and Quora. Almost overnight, the game changed. News of a new $60M deal between Reddit and Google has begun to levy changes in both of the monster presences in the question and answer space.

If you are wondering if you should choose Reddit or Quora for your preferred platform for showing your expertise and gaining back some of the organic space that you possibly held for your keywords by ranking within Reddit or Quora, the answer is going to be complex.

Just like when Twitter became popular, it is a good idea to pause and reflect on a strategy for crushing it. And just like you post differently on different platforms (if you are into doing things right), you can pause and build a strategy for Reddit and Quora. Or you can reject doing anything until the dust settles on all the changes.

It seems Reddit has a stronger hammer if you weigh their monthly organic traffic (600M) vs that of Quora (252M). However, Quora may hold better content for your brand. Here is a graphic that demonstrates what’s happening with Quora and Reddit answers. It’s likely the demographics of Reddit will shift as it gets more and more organic placement within Google.

how reddit and quora taking over page 1 google

According to Hubspot.com’s blog, “Quora users are generally highly educated, with 65% having a college degree and 28% having a graduate degree. They are also more likely to be over 18 and have a high household income (HHI) than users of other publishers, such as LinkedIn, Reddit, HuffPost, and the WSJ. In fact, 54% of Quora users report an annual HHI of over $100,000.”

If your brand is a popular brand for people under 30, head over to Reddit and get engaged. Spend some time answering and “playing” with people before posting promotional links or information. Start a subreddit and engage with the answers in a helpful way but have a sense of humor, and be irreverent.

Reddit Strategies that Work

From digital marketing agency CEO Dorm Brenton (https://TieDyeDigital.com) comes this hack for helping a business client get seen on Reddit.

“Start a new inquiry on Reddit related to your client’s industry example Anyone know a good roofer in (location)? In that expand on it. I’m looking for a good metal roofer. See the comments come in. Links will come in but eventually post your clients service page. Then post your client’s website. This is not really an SEO effective practice yet but this is a cheat hack to get a viral ish link to show up for that search term per location.”

Quora Strategies that Work

What seems to work for Quora is consistent posting of interesting questions related to your brand so you become the go-to authority in the space for your brand. Another tactic that has worked is to post an unusual or off-putting comment like “Don’t start a business if you want to make money online.” People so often run off and start a business when they can actually do other things (like become a prolific Quora go-to expert) to make money online.

In sum, the Quora and Reddit trains are coming. Are you gonna jump on or stay on the ground? Take some time to create a strategy that you can implement with the same qualities of a solid search engine optimization strategy:

1: Be authentic
2: Be authoritative
3: Ask good questions
4: Be consistent
5: Engage

One other thing that works on any and all platforms is to comment and like. People are starved for kindness in the often rough and tumble online world. When you take time to be kind, it comes back ten-fold. One book that works to frame your strategy on Quora or Reddit was written by GaryVee “Jab Jab Jab, Right Hook.” It still holds a powerful space in a solid strategy even as the game changes, well, daily.

Good luck! Don’t get overwhelmed. Take inspirational steps each day towards your goals. The changes in page one organic google are not likely to slow. It will increasingly become challenging as new takes the place of old. If you would like help forming your Quora or Reddit strategy, reach out for a complimentary consultation.
